Plant cells of wood contain:
  • 1. cellulose
  • 2. hemicellulose
  • 3. lignin
Lignin is a structural monomer with aromatic properties and a three-dimensional propanol structural polymer compound. The lignin content ranges from 14% to 32% in hardwood and softwood. Lignin does not have a melting point, but it has a softening point. When the lignin temperature is from 70 to 110°C, it has adhesive characteristics. With certain pressure and temperature, wood particles can be bonded together. Therefore, wood pellets can be formed by hot pressing without additives and adhesives.

Raw material granulation from 1mm to 3mm. Dust, leaves, branches, and tree bark are not suitable for pelleting. Different machines are used for grinding raw materials, depending on the material and dimensions (for wood, straw, reeds, vines, clover, etc.). There are mills, crushers, choppers, hammer mills on the market (which we do not produce!).

Moisture content in raw material is one of the main factors in the pelleting process. When the moisture content in the raw material is too high, the steam generated during the pelleting process causes the pellets to crack. High moisture content can also lead to material sticking between the rollers and the die, causing damage. When the moisture content is too low, pellets cannot be formed because water softens and plasticizes lignin. Low moisture content can also cause die clogging (a so-called cake forms on the surface), which can damage the pellet mill. Our pellet mill has mechanical and electronic protection to prevent machine breakdowns. The motor is not directly connected to the press. For sawdust, straw, and other materials, the appropriate moisture range is from 8% to 15%. Even though there are significant differences in lignin content in different materials, the appropriate moisture content for forming is essentially the same.

The cheapest check is with a moisture meter for sawdust, with a long probe. The best and extremely expensive is the use of optical moisture sensors, used in professional production. If the moisture is higher, the raw material must be dried in a dryer, sun, chamber, etc. If the moisture is lower, water must be added to the raw material (conditioning). Moisture must be absorbed deeply in the particle (cells) of the raw material, not on its surface. The location of moisture depends on the conditioning method and material aging time. Coarser grinding hinders moisture penetration. There are three conditioning methods in professional production:
  • 1. Water
  • 2. Steam
  • 3. Mechanical

There are two types of pellet presses according to die construction: ring die and flat die. Ring die pellet mills:
  • 1. With a fixed die
  • 2. With a rotating die
They are mainly used in professional production, and the price of the press and spare parts is high. Flat die pellet mills:
  • 1. With a rotating die. The rollers are not driven but turn due to the friction force of the die itself. This significantly shortens the lifespan of the rollers and the die.
  • 2. With a fixed die. The rollers are driven above the stationary die. The distance between the roller and the die is between 0.05 and 0.3mm. This significantly extends the lifespan of the rollers and the die.
